Who We Are

Saint Luke's Lutheran Church began as a small group of founders, worshipping in a local garage by lamplight.  It was officially established in 1955 and has been a longstanding house of worship and pillar of community service in Washington Township and beyond, engaging in faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and in service for the sake of God’s mission in the world.  We are a member congregation of the NJ Synod of the nationwide Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA; Home - Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (elca.org)), which is a participant in the Lutheran World Federation (LWF; Home - Lutheran World Federation (lutheranworld.org)) as a global communion of churches.

This church, inspired and led by the Holy Spirit, is an all-inclusive local congregation, gathered for worship and Christian service.  We are a people created by God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and called by God to live out the message of Christ in love and service to all people.  We bear witness to God’s creative, redeeming, and sanctifying activity in the world, reaching out to all people to bring them to faith in Christ.

Since its inception, St. Luke’s has blossomed into a church with a myriad of programs, services, and outreaches.  We hold regular weekly congregational worship services, as well as services for special or holy days.  Our services are Pastor-led, offering weekly opportunity to partake in the Eucharist Sacrament of Holy Communion.  Weekly adult education/bible studies allow for meaningful connection and conversation while doing “deep dives” into the meaning and message of studied bible passages.  The weekly youth Sunday school curriculum is designed to progress students from early age through 1st Communion through Confirmation as an adult member of the church (ages 3 through 8th grade).

Saint Luke's nurtures its members in the Word of God so as to enable them to grow in faith and hope and love, to see daily life as the primary setting for the exercise of their Christian calling, and to use the gifts of the Spirit for their life together and for their calling in the world.

In response to God’s love, this congregation is service-oriented and devoted: - to community outreach to meet human needs - to care for the sick and the aged - to be advocates for peace, reconciliation, dignity, justice and equity for all people - to care for the marginalized - to embrace and welcome racially and ethnically diverse people - to providing the hungry with physical and spiritual nourishment - to restoring homes and hearts for those in need - to distributing supplies to local families and children - to proclaiming the Gospel of Christ to our local community in word, deed and truth, to love our neighbors as ourselves.  This is the wonderfully blessed and busy life of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

Our Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary are accessible for both private prayer and usage, and usage by public organizations.
